Arabs have been coming to the United States for hundreds of years. The first significant number of immigrants came between 1880 and 1924. This slowed down drastically because of restrictive immigration laws passed after World War I. Since the 1970s, the number of Arab Americans has increased rapidly due to a change in these laws, and because of wars and economic hardships in some Arab countries. It is estimated that by 2000 there were about 4.2 million Arab Americans; this number has continued to grow over the last few years.
